Memorial weekend festivities signify the beginning of summer for most people. The true meaning of Memorial Day is being overshadowed by the hype of holiday sales and travel destinations.

Memorial Day commemorates the men and women who died while serving in the military. There are people that recognize the day where most businesses and schools are closed. While others still take the time to honor those who serve and have served. But do students understand the true significance of Memorial Day.

Many students are aware and understand the circumstances surrounding the War of Iraq. Many may have friends or family serving in the military. Even so the day goes by like any other.

What students may not realize is that they are part of a history in the making. The War of Iraq is currently being studied in history classes and will continue to be studied in the future.

Remembering those who served decades ago may not seem too significant for most students, but knowing those who died while fighting for the current war puts the day in perspective.

Even if some people do not know any one close to him or her, put yourself in the shoes of others who do. Whether it may be a husband or wife; a son or daughter; brother or sister; even a father or mother, we all should take the time to honor and remember those who served.

Educators may teach elementary students about Memorial Day through activities like flag making or inviting veterans to share their experiences with middle and high school students. But there are many more activities that can be carried out to remember the men and women who fought for our country.

There are many Memorial Day parades, services and other various activities that most cities and towns in Northeastern Wisconsin partake in. The following link shows the Memorial Day activities for communities in and surrounding Brown County. http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/article/20100523/GPG0101/5230599/Memorial-Day-weekend-activities

Memorial Day is a time to remember the past and celebrate the present. It is a time to honor the men and women who sacrificed their lives to keep this nation safe. It is a time to honor the brave soldiers who are currently fighting, and thank them for their duty and commitment to our nation.

Take the time to remember why we have the day.
