Most families consider Memorial Day the unofficial start to summer, but there is so much more to this important holiday. It’s the country’s tribute to those fallen heroes who died defending our freedom. To celebrate Memorial Day 2014 in and around Atlanta, there are a variety of family-friendly events and celebrations.
Memorial Day Weekend at Stone Mountain Park
The Big Rock, as Atlanta natives affectionately call Stone Mountain, is one of the city’s most family-friendly attractions. In 2014, the park is set to honor America’s troops and their families with a three-day celebration of American spirit during Atlanta’s largest Memorial Day event. The renowned Lasershow in Mountainvision will salute the troops with a special extended show, followed by a fireworks finale on Saturday, Sunday and Monday (May 24-26) on Memorial Day weekend. All active and retired military personnel will receive one free Adventure Pass with valid ID and will save up to $10 per person for immediate family members, plus 20% off food and merchandise. Head to Stone Mountain Park’s website for all the details.

Lake Lanier Islands Resort is ready to kick-off the 2014 summer season with a bang. This weekend, enjoy sand between your toes and a cool breeze coming off the lake. Live music will be featured all weekend and a dazzling fireworks display will explode over the islands on Sunday night (weather permitting). In addition to over a dozen waterslides and attractions, carnival rides like the towering lakeside Ferris Wheel, a slew of waterfront dining establishments, pick-up games of beach volleyball, family-friendly matches of miniature golf, and adventurous pursuits like kayaking, zip-lining, and paddle-boarding, the 4-day Memorial Day Weekend Celebration is going to be the perfect start to the perfect summer. Roswell celebrates Memorial Day 2014 with Georgia’s largest ceremony. The free event on Monday, May 26 features memorial displays open to the public, pre-ceremony music provided by Atlanta wind symphony and Chattahoochee Celtic pipes and drums. The featured speaker is Jonna Doolittle Hoppes, founder of the Doolittle Foundation, an organization dedicated to making U.S. military history available to students. Veterans share moments of reflection during the ceremony before the 21-gun salute. Because of abrupt gunshots from the 21-gun salute, this event is not suitable for pets. Food tent available. For more information, check out Roswell's website.

On Saturday, May 24, the Atlanta History Center will host a daylong event that includes various activities at Veterans Park. Attendees can role-play and experience what it was like to be a World War I soldier. Program events include a firing demonstration held on the lawn next to the Mabel Dorn Reeder Amphitheater, arts and crafts in the Olympic lobby, and reenactors representing veterans from the American Revolution at Smith Family Farm. At 2 p.m., nationally acclaimed author Alvin Townley will speak about his novel “Defiant,” an account of the 11 U.S. POWs who endured Vietnam’s most infamous prison, Hanoi Hilton, the women who fought for them, and the one who never returned. 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. on May 24.
