Tomorrow May 26, San Diegans will pay their respects to fallen heroes for Memorial Day. Spend the day commemorating the service our nations heros with events and memorial services around San Diego county.
The USS Midway Museum lets visitors step onto a retired warship. Their Memorial Day Ceremony takes place on the deck of the USS Midway, which is located in the harbor in downtown San Diego. Starting at 10 a.m. they will be doing a Blood Bank Blood Drive as well as family on-board activities including “Meet the Aviators and the Planes They Flew”, and Kids Discovery Zone. In the Kids Discovery Zones, children will be able to explore areas of the Midway’s hangers, which feature exhibits and activities such as ship and plane restoration and military demonstrations. At 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. their Memorial Day Ceremony will begin, which features a fly over of a vintage aircraft. The classic rock band “World Classic Rockers” will be performing a show on the deck of the Midway. For the Memorial Day events they are offering discounted ticket prices: adults are $18, seniors $15, students (with a student ID) $13, children $8 and retired military (with ID) $8. The Museum is celebrating their 10th anniversary this year.
The 2nd Annual EOD Warrior 5K will take place at NTC Park at Liberty from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. All of the proceeds earned from the EOD Warrior 5K go to the EOD Warrior Foundation (EODWF), which is a foundation that provides support and financial assistance to active-duty and veteran wounded, injured or ill warriors and maintains the EOD Memorial. They provided emergency financial assistance, education opportunities and provide emotional support. The 5K run starts at 9 a.m. and both the junior EOD Warrior 1K and the EOD Bomb Suit Relay start at 10 a.m. Awards and a raffle will begin after the Bomb suit relay concludes. On-lookers can visit the beer garden from 9:30 to 2 p.m. and sample from the array of local food trucks. Registration is closed online, but runners can still register before the race.
The Kensington parade will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Marlborough Avenue and will go from Rideway Drive to Adams Avenue, the parade is free and open to the public. Before the parade there will a relay race for teams of up four (of any age) that will be a one-mile race, the price for each team of four is $30.
