We will celebrate Memorial Day on Monday, May 26 this year. Research has shown that students in high school and college are lacking in their knowledge of history about their country. Memorial Day is often a holiday that students know little or nothing about. Early childhood teachers and parents of young children have an opportunity to introduce this holiday in kid-friendly ways to begin recognition of this important holiday for our country.
Young children easily relate to family activities, and Memorial Day is a time to celebrate family history. One of the ways that parents can introduce children to this holiday is to remember a family member who has served in one of our country's military branches of service. Visiting a veteran's cemetery to honor a soldier can be a family tradition. Sarasota National Cemetery, located at 9810 State Road 72 in Sarasota can be a family outing to place a flag at a soldier's grave. This cemetery was the 6th veteran's cemetery established in the state of Florida. The 295 acre cemetery honors our veterans in a beautiful setting. Children might like to choose a living soldier to create pictures or cards to send overseas. Living family members who are serving overseas would like to receive cards for Memorial Day.
Sarasota Jungle Gardens is honoring our veterans on Memorial day with free admission for a veteran with the purchase of one adult or children's admission. Special activities throughout the gardens will honor veterans. This family-friendly activity can be added to your celebration of Memorial Day. You may log on at www.Sarasotajunglegardens.com for Memorial Day activities.
Traditional patriotic music is also a part of celebrations on Memorial Day. The Sarasota Concert Band will present its annual Memorial Day concert on May 26 from 5-7 p.m. The concert will take place at Phillippi Estate Park, located at 5500 S. Tamiami Trail in Sarasota. Patriotic music is part of the history of Memorial Day celebrations that children can be educated to associate with this holiday. Tickets for the concert are priced at $5 for adults and children are free.
Commemorate this Memorial Day with these family-friendly activities and start some traditions with your children to add this holiday to their knowledge of history in their country.
