Memorial Day 2014 closings: Are stores, banks, DMV, post office, Walmart open?

What's open and what's closed on Memorial Day 2014? Americans are wondering if there's mail delivery on Memorial Day, and if the post office is open or closed Monday, May 26. Many people have the holiday off and need to know if their banks are open before they head out. More importantly, people are anxious to spend the day shopping and are asking if Walmart, Target and other major stores are open on Memorial Day. According to The Epoch Times on Sunday, May 25, some stores are closed on the federal holiday in the United States. However, the majority are open.

Memorial Day is a federal holiday and is always observed the last Monday in May. This year, Memorial Day just happens to fall on May 26. You're in luck if you want to go shopping on Memorial Day, however, if you're looking to mail packages or register your car at the local DMV, you'll have to wait until Tuesday, May 27 if you didn't get to it last week.

Is Walmart, Best Buy, Target, Kmart, Costco Open on Memorial Day?

Absolutely. In fact, most businesses are open and look forward to huge Memorial Day Sales. Area Walmart, Target, Kmart, Best Buy, Trader Joe's, Home Depot, Sears, Macy's, BJ's, Lowe's stores are open and many of them have been advertising Memorial Day sales flyers, banners and ads in the newspapers, on TV, and the internet for over a week now.

Factory outlets, malls, car dealers, appliance stores, media outlets, etc, all have great sales this holiday weekend. In many cases, these businesses started gearing up the Friday before the holiday to take advantage of a four day weekend.

Believe it or not, The Epoch Times reported on Sunday that Costco is not open on Memorial Day. With all the stores open on this federal holiday, Costco chooses not to open. Costco customers will have to wait until tomorrow, May 27, to shop their stores again.

The U.S. Post Office is Closed on Memorial Day

According to the USPS Post Office, there is no mail delivery on Memorial Day, Monday, May 26, 2014 in Rhode Island or the rest of the United States. Memorial Day is also a U.S. Postal Holiday (USPS), and all U.S. post offices are closed for business. This includes not only mail delivery to your residence or business, but also local post office lobby hours as well. Mail delivery will resume on Tuesday, May 27.

Are Banks Open on Memorial Day?

Because Memorial Day is a federal holiday, Monday, May 26 is also one of many bank holidays this year. TD Bank Stores isn't open either, even though they are open many of the 10 federal holidays throughout the year. Call first to be sure if your local bank branch is open on Memorial Day.

Rhode Island Department of Motor Vehicles’ (DMV) offices are closed on Memorial Day.
