Memo to Red Sox: It’s the roster, stupid

See also

The return of John Farrell to the Boston Red Sox fold may or may not turn out to be as noteworthy as it is being portrayed, but it sure isn’t as important as the personnel the club had on board at the end of the season.

Herewith, then, is one man’s take on the players about whom a decision must be made. It’s based on the list published yesterday on boston.com – what say you?

Under Contract

RHP Clay Buchholz (through 2015, team options for '16 and '17)
- good news; largely turned it around even without the presence of new manager and former (and future?) mentor John Farrell

RHP John Lackey (though 2014, team option for '15)
- don’t write him off; turns out he was pitching ugly for reasons of physical injury

LHP Jon Lester (through 2013, team option for '14)
- too much talent to duplicate 2012 performance, but may not benefit as much from Farrell’s influence since the latter’s attention should be on managing, not pitching

2B Dustin Pedroia (though 2014, team option for '15)
- the best news of all; forget Reggie, he’s the straw that stirs the drink

Arbitration Eligible
(Must be offered a contract by Dec. 2)

RHP Alfredo Aceves
- in the immortal words of Hazel Mae, “buh-bye”

RHP Scott Atchison
- make the offer

RHP Andrew Bailey
- make the offer

- make the offer

LHP Craig Breslow
- make the offer

LHP Andrew Miller

LHP Franklin Morales
- make the offer

C Jarrod Saltalamacchia
- make the offer

OF Ryan Sweeney
- “good luck in your future endeavors”

Free Agents

RHP Aaron Cook
- “off you go, then”

1B James Loney
- make him an offer, for someone has to take the infielders' throws

RHP Daisuke Matsuzaka
- sayonara

DH David Ortiz
- “get ’er done,” yes, even for two years. Who you gonna get that’s better?

RHP Vicente Padilla
- can’t have too many (affordable) arms

OF Scott Podsednik
- make him an offer, but on Sox’s terms

OF Cody Ross
- sign him up! He didn’t quit and can play pretty good ball
