Have you "broadened" your experienced in the basic duty puzzles? Acquired that all-important Pirate Badge or Subscription? Good! Now you're ready to Navigate with the Navy--and memorize a significant portion of the routes that make up your Ocean.
Last post, I said that each island with a Palace on it (as opposed to a Fort) has a Navy. This may not be 100% accurate. The good caretakers of Yppedia seem to think it's not a Palace that's required, but a physical Notice Board on the docks. In any case, if an island has a Navy, that Navy will run missions on ships sailing two-way trips along all routes with an endpoint at that island.
For example, if you check out the Yppedia page for Byrne Island (Cerulean Ocean), you'll see that there are three routes radiating out from the island: the routes to Alpha and Papaya Islands in the Diamond Archipelago, and the route to Remora Island in the Sapphire Archipelago. Missions with the Byrne Island Navy will take place aboard ships sailing along these three routes. (The "Learn to [Puzzle]" missions are exceptions; they sail in a tight, non-chartable three-league-point circle beginning and ending at the Navy's island.)
Thus, undertaking the Navigate with the Navy mission with the Byrne Island Navy will provide you with an opportunity to memorize Byrne-Alpha, Byrne-Papaya, and even the interarch route Byrne-Remora. No buying or winning of charts required!
Each route consists of a number of league points (LPs), represented by a compass rose on your ocean view window (upper right) at which your ship will come to a brief pause. LPs also show up as dots on Yer Known World (click on the map icon under Charts in your Booty, then click on View). Memorized LPs show up as brown on Yer Known World; LPs you haven't yet memorized will be blue or, if you have no chart to reveal them, absent.
To have a chance to memorize a league point via duty navigation, you must arrive at that league point
- while at the duty navigation station
- with a duty report of Fine or better
- without having turned around or engaged with another ship since last league point.
Navigating with the Navy means not having to worry about that third bullet point. No one attacks Navy ships (exception: "Battle Brigands with the Navy"). Also, you don't get the option to turn a Navy vessel around. All you have to do is make sure you're duty navigating at a level of "Fine" or better when you reach each league point.
Do this between 3 and 8 times per LP, and you're golden--or the LP will be, in any case. Golden. Brown. Whatever. Memmed.
Unfortunately, you can't use the Navy to navigate any one specific route. They don't take requests. You can't even choose which Navy to navigate with. When you Navigate with the Navy, you'll get whichever route with whichever Navy is available at that moment. It'll be either a Navy from the archipelago you're currently standing in or a Navy that's just ported in that arch, so you can exert a small amount of influence by waiting in a particular arch. Beyond that, however, you're looking at semi-random chance.
So how do you most efficiently mem LPs with the Navy? That'll be a topic for next post. Stay tuned!
