Today, Congressman Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) along with 16 other Democrats and one Republican from Congress, sent a bipartisan letter to President Obama regarding the reclassification of Marijuana on Wednesday. Claiming that since marijuana is less dangerous than alcohol, the letter reasons that it should not be classified as a Schedule I or even Schedule II drug. The Congresspersons ask President Obama to instruct Attorney General Holder to reclassify the plant as per Title 21 of the United States Code (USC) Controlled Substances Act.

The Attorney General shall apply the provisions of this subchapter to the controlled substances listed in the schedules established by section 812 of this title and to any other drug or other substance added to such schedules under this subchapter. Except as provided in subsections (d) and (e) of this section, the Attorney General may by rule

(1) add to such a schedule or transfer between such schedules any drug or other substance if he—

(A) finds that such drug or other substance has a potential for abuse, and

(B) makes with respect to such drug or other substance the findings prescribed by subsection (b) of section 812 of this title for the schedule in which such drug is to be placed; or

(2) remove any drug or other substance from the schedules if he finds that the drug or other substance does not meet the requirements for inclusion in any schedule.

The classification of marijuana as a Schedule I is outright science-denial at this point. Doctors, scientists, and now even our elected officials are noticing the lack of danger associated with the plant as well as the medical uses that a Schedule I classification denies.

"Classifying marijuana as Schedule I at federal level," the letter reads, "perpetuates an unjust and irrational system. Schedule I recognizes no medical use, disregarding both medical evidence and the laws of nearly half of the states that have legalized medical marijuana."

The other representatives who signed onto the letter with Congressman Blumenauer are Steve Cohen (D-TN), Sam Farr (D-CA), Raúl M. Grijalva (D-AZ), Mike Honda (D-CA), Jared Huffman (D-CA), Barbara Lee (D-CA), Zoe Lofgren (D-CA), Alan Lowenthal (D-CA), James P. McGovern (D-MA), James P. Moran (D-VA), Beto O’Rourke (D-TX), Jared Polis (D-CO), Mike Quigley (D-IL), Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA), Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), Eric Swalwell (D-CA), and Peter Welch (D-VT).
