It was a cold Saturday night in Las Vegas, and the big top tent of Absinthe was emptying out. As the patrons of the show Absinthe scurried away to warmer areas another group of people started to form a line.
Each person waiting in line had a special invitation to the debut album release party of the Green Fairy known as Melody Sweets. Unlike many cd release parties I have attended this one, was cloaked in veil of mystery.
The tent filled up quickly. The guests found their seats and eagerly waited for what Melody Sweets had in store for them. After all this was the Absinthe Tent who knows what was about to happen.
At the stroke of Midnight, the lights in the room flickered off. A brief comment from the Gazillionaire came over the sound system and suddenly some televisions scattered around the room came to life.
There was Penny Pibbets broadcasting live from the dressing room. Penny introduced her sock puppet Melody Sweets and jumped right into an inappropriate yet funny start to the show.
The real Melody Sweets interrupted Pennys interlude and introduced her new video “Love Bite.” The video started out with a snake charmer playing an East Indian tune with a seductive and mostly naked Melody Sweets dancing as a snake. Joining Melody in her debut video were the men of Absinthe wearing nothing but leather loincloths.
As the video screens went dark, a stage off to the side lit up. The snake charmer who bears an uncanny resemblance to the Gazillionaire began to play. The crowd went wild as Melody Sweets now sang “Love Bite” in person.
This was just the beginning of the night as the sultry Melody Sweets hypnotized the audience with her melodic voice and gyrating body. Melody not only sang songs from her new album, but also performed Burlesque skits to go along with each song.
My favorite performance consisted of two ladies dressed like explorers. The only lights in the room were the ones located on the headlamps the ladies wore. Melody Sweets came out dressed like Cleopatra singing the song “Golddigga”off her new album. The explorers removed articles of gold clothing off Melody as she sang. By the end of the song they had Melody in the bag.
Melody Sweets has a sensual and melodic voice that captivates her audience. Think Jessica Rabbit singing “Do Right” in the movie Rodger Rabbit mixed with dash of Rockabilly Pinup for style and a heaping dose of burlesque for immense sex appeal and this is Melody Sweets!
Surrounded by the cast of Absinthe, Melody Sweets Album Release Party played out more like a burlesque melodrama with the comedic interludes of Penny Pibbets and the Gazillionaire. At one point Penny had a man topless in pasties on the center stage. Another part of the show had a professional burlesque performer strutting her stuff on the main stage.
The last song of the show wrapped up this fantastic evening perfectly as the whole cast joined Melody Sweets as she sung the song “As Good As it Gets” off her new album titled Burlesque in the Black. Champagne glasses were raised in toasts as glitter filled the air. This great song reminded me of music from the 1940’s when music relied on the personalities of the performers instead of the capabilities of the editing software.
