Tomorrow, for one day only, Mellow Mushroom will honor it's clientele in the theme of "Way Back Wednesday," featuring small cheese pizzas for $2.50, Coke products for $ .30, and $ .75 brews (Michelob, Budweiser and PBR), all in honor of its 40th anniversary.
Founded in Atlanta, back in 1974, the now nationwide franchise with more than 170 locations in 18-states, is notorious for it's unique style of pizza and sandwiches. For example, the wheat flour, hand tossed pizza crust is slightly darker than what we know as the norm in the world of pizzas. And while many of the offerings come with the chain's vine ripened tomato based sauce, some of the specialty pizzas come in white. Take for example the popular selling "Holy Shitake Pie." Imagine pleasing the palate with a blend of mushrooms (shiitake, buttons and portobellos), caramelized onions, garlic, a couple different cheeses with a dash of black truffle oil. And for meat lovers, the red sauce based "Mighty Meaty" is loaded with pepperoni, sausage, ground beef, ham and bacon with mozzarella.
And just because there are no fryers on the premises, crispy wings can and do still exist. Served with an array of sauces that can be had on the side, the wings are oven roasted to perfection and finger lickin' good. Also from the same side of the menu and equally as fun to enjoy are the soft pretzels. Using the pizza dough, soft pretzels come hot to the table with an array of options ranging from sweet to salty. However, the best of all for dipping hands down, is the "Turbodog beer cheese" sauce.
The Wednesday, August 20th celebration will also include a contest offering patrons the chance to win a trip for two to Amsterdam by posing with a backdrop of the first Mellow Mushroom location and posting it to Instagram with #40YearsBaked to enter.
