Melissa Harris-Perry: Teary-eyed apology to Romneys gets mixed reviews (Video)

Melissa Harris-Perry, an MSNBC host, mustered up a teary-eyed, on-air apology to the Mitt Romney family on Saturday, according to a report by Huffington Post on Saturday. The apology was made for comments she had made about Mitt Romney’s black, adopted grandchild this past week.

With Harris-Perry at the helm, a group of panelists mocked Kieran, the baby that was adopted into the Romney family recently. The mocking took place as the panelists and television viewers were looking at a family photo of Mitt Romney with his grandchild on his knee. In no time, the backlash started for Harris-Perry as she was extremely criticized for having made fun of the infant for being an adopted black child in the Romney family.

Following an apology via social media web site Twitter and a statement, Harris-Perry apologized again on Saturday by stating how deeply sorry she was for what went down – and backfired on her – earlier in the week.

She said that whatever the intent was, the reality is that the segment proceeded in a way that was offensive, and showing the photo in that context, that segment, was poor judgment. She said, “So without reservation or qualification, I apologize to the Romney family.

She went on to say that the public figure’s families should not be treated “callously or thoughtlessly,” especially their children. She insisted that her intent was not malicious, but confessed that she broke the ground rule regarding families being off-limits.

As absolutely necessary, she also apologized to other families that have been formed through transracial adoption because, she claims, she is deeply sorry that she and the panel members suggested that interracial families are in any way funny or deserving of ridicule.

Then she said that on her program, they are dedicated to advocating for a wide diversity of families. She also said that her show is genuinely appreciative of everyone who offered serious criticism of her show last Sunday – when she mocked the grandchild of Mitt Romney.

The backlash started after a photo of Mitt Romney’s family was shown on her program and two panelists on the show made jokes about the black baby being the only black person in the Romney family photo. Making things worse, Harris-Perry said she wondered what a marriage between Romney’s black grandchild and North West – Kanye West and Kim Kardashian’s baby – would be like.

Many of her critics believe Harris-Perry is trying to save her job giving repeated – and now even teary-eyed – apologies. Many of her liberal-minded fans say the situation is completely overblown – yet they claim conservatives are the racists and the ones rejecting equality in society.

In recent days, Harris-Perry has irritated several high-profile conservatives, including Sarah Palin with her undesirable comments and extremely liberal views.
