John Lennon’s song Imagine was performed by Melissa Etheridge in New York City on Tuesday night and fans are mixed about this latest decision. Hearing Imagine every year in Times Square has always been a John Lennon tradition, but it stopped being original a few years back. And like last night, the artist who decides to sing the song always puts their own style into the moment leaving some fans annoyed. People Magazine reported on Tuesday that the special rendition was added to the line up and most fans didn't even know until Melissa performed.
There’s no doubt that Melissa Etheridge is a talented entertainer. With her previous segment showcasing new music, she was a welcomed moment for the event. However, hearing John Lennon sing Imagine always offered a non-commercialization moment. Lennon’s version doesn't push an album or remind fans of a new tour. It’s just a song about hope by the man who sung it first. Whether Etheridge did a good job or not singing the song, she was pushing her music and it seemed so out of place.
Overall fans don’t like the tradition of other people singing Imagine. The entire event is becoming so commercialized. Next year let’s all hope that Times Square allows the original song to play again. It could be one thing that wasn't all about sponsorships and advertising.
