New York Times bestselling author Melissa de la Cruz and co-author Michael Johnston celebrated the launch of their latest novel, Frozen on September 26, 2013. The book party was held at Tyler Rollins Fine Art in New York's Chelsea. Frozen is the first installment of the new Heart of Dread series, and the first novel for which de la Cruz's husband is being publicly recognized as a co-author.
Melissa de la Cruz is best known for her immensely popular Witches of East End series (now on Lifetime) and the supernatural Blue Bloods series, each of which Johnston co-created. With the success of Witches of East End, de la Cruz has turned the novel into a Lifetime television series that aired this fall, starring Julia Ormond and Jenna Dewan-Tatum. Frozen is the most recent addition to the duo's list of published books, and has already received a number of positive critical reviews, making it a must-read this season.
Combining both authors' love for adventure stories with a twist of epic fantasy, Frozen is an action-packed thrill ride combining mystery, adventure, romance and magic, while also serving as a shrewd commentary on the timely environmental issues facing the future of our planet. Set in the future following a "Big Freeze," Frozen follows a young female blackjack dealer from New Vegas, in search of a paradise where the sun still shines and the water is turquoise - and most importantly a place where she will not be persecuted, even if her darkest secret comes to light.
Both having lived in New York City, de la Cruz and Johnston were joined by many close friends and fans, including reality TV personality Alex McCord, art gallery director Tyler Rollins, and writer Ben Widdicombe. Penguin Group team members and various other literature enthusiasts attended.
Upon arrival, guests entering the gallery were greeted with cocktails and hors d'oeuvres. Going along with the science fiction and post-Ice Age theme of Frozen, everyone had the option to indulge in delicious frozen fruit in the form of beautifully crafted ice and mythical dragons. These treats were provided by Fruzen Ice, and made the perfect topical addition to each wine and champagne glass.
While celebrating the new novel, guests had the chance to walk around and enjoy the artwork of Patricia Perez Eustaquio. The exhibit, entitled "The Future That Was," set the scene throughout the Tyler Rollins Fine Art gallery.
Melissa de la Cruz made a heart-warming speech about her excitement for the book launch. "Everything we ever talked about is in the book," she said, beaming at her husband, "If you like the book then you kind of like us."
Frozen was published by the Penguin Group on September 17, 2013, and is currently available in bookstores and online.
