The Gwinnett Braves lost to the Durham Bulls on Sunday in the final game of the 2014 season-opening series at Bulls Athletic Park by an 8-1 final. The club’s split the four-game set after the Bulls took the opener and the finale while the Braves took the second and third games. Ernesto Mejia homered in each of the first three games, including his first at-bat of the season, and led Gwinnett with four homeruns and seven runs batted in the series.
Mejia was one of four Gwinnett hitters to total four hits against Durham in the weekend series. Joey Terdoslavich, Tommy La Stella, and Philip Gosselin each totaled four base knocks against Bulls pitching. In addition to Mejia’s four homers, Mark Hamilton and Edward Salcedo each connected for HR’s for the Braves.
Gwinnett showed aggressiveness on the bases with Todd Cunningham and Jose Constanza each swiping two bases.
Hector Daniel Rodriguez (1-0, 1.80) took the mound in the third game and delivered the most effective start of the series for Gwinnett. The 29-year old Rodriguez gave up one run (earned) on two hits while working 5.0 innings. The lefty rung up nine strikeouts while walking just one on his way to the win.
Ryan Buchter, Atahualpa Severino, and Wirfin Obispo each earned their first Hold of the new season while Cody Martin and Juan Jaime each picked up their first Saves of the 2014 season.
Martin scattered three hits in 3.0 innings of one run ball to get his first Save of the new season while Jaime held the Bulls scoreless in an inning of work to get his S.
The Gwinnett Braves (2-2) open a four-game series with the Norfolk Tides (1-3) at Harbour Park on Monday. The home-opener will be Friday against the Durham Bulls. First-pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
