Megachurch thieves robbed Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church of 600K, according to a CBN News report on March 12. Lakewood, the single largest church in the country, issued a statement on Monday that $600,000 was discovered missing from the church safe, stolen sometime between early afternoon Sunday and Monday morning.
“We are working with the police to fully investigate the incident,” the statement read, “The funds were fully insured, and we are working with our insurance company to restore the stolen funds of the church.”
Church members, understandably shocked and dismayed, have been made aware of the possibility of identity theft, due to information obtained from the envelopes, including checks and credit card numbers. The statement “reiterated that this was not an electronic data breach, and was only limited to donations made during this past weekend’s Saturday and Sunday services.
“You can’t believe people would do that, especially at a church,” said Brad Duryea, a member from Lakewood.
At this time there have been no arrests and no further information has been made available.
Donald Iloff, Jr., a spokesman for the church commented on Tuesday, “Lakewood Church is working in conjunction with the Houston Police Department to investigate this matter. We do not want to compromise the investigation by commenting at this time.”
