The Mega Millions jackpot was up to $425 million just before the numbers were drawn on Friday, but no one picked the winning numbers. Mega Millions basically says, “Sorry, try again!” This time, try it with a jackpot up to $550 million. Actually, they probably aren’t saying “sorry” because, historically, the higher jackpots get more people to play.
The new monetary level for the Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2013 drawing is the second-largest Mega Millions jackpot in history. Additionally, it is the fourth-largest jackpot ever experienced in the United States, according to the information posted on the Mega Millions web site. The current record jackpot is $656 million which was divided among three Mega Millions players on March 30, 2012.
Not everyone walked away a loser on Friday, however. There are nine more $1 million winners from that drawing which brings the game up to 39 millionaires since the new game was initiated in October of this year. The $1 million second-tier prize is a new feature of the Mega Millions game – which is four times larger than the previous second prize of $250,000. Friday’s million dollar winners matched the first five numbers but not the Mega Ball – and those winning tickets were bought in six different states. One ticket was purchased in Colorado, Connecticut and New Jersey while two tickets were sold in Florida, Michigan and New York.
The winning numbers on Friday the 13th were 19, 24, 26, 27, and 70 with the Mega Ball 12. The Megaplier was 2x.
