The grand prize in the Mega Millions lottery keeps climbing, with lottery officials announcing Tuesday it has hit $30 million.
It could turn out to be a happy New Year for someone. If there is a winner, he or she may take it as a lump sum of $23 million, or collect it over a period of 26 years at about $1,155,000 per year minus taxes.
Drawings are held Tuesday and Friday at 11 p.m.
Tickets are $1 each.
"Players may pick six numbers from two separate pools of numbers - five different numbers from 1 to 56 and one number from 1 to 46 - or select Easy Pick," according to lottery rules. "You win the jackpot by matching all six winning numbers in a drawing."
The lottery is played in 44 states, districts and territories. For stores near you that sell tickets, see the nationwide interactive map on the national lottery website.
"There was one jackpot winning ticket in the Dec. 14, 2012, Mega Millions drawing," officials said. "The winning ticket was bought in California. The jackpot was an estimated $35 million."
