The jackpot for Tuesday night's (Dec. 17) drawing of Mega Millions climbed to $636 million as ticket sales rose even higher than lottery officials expected.

The odds of matching the winning numbers were estimated to be 1 in 259 million, in the second highest payout in Mega Million's history. The largest jackpot of $656 million was recorded in March of 2012.

The winning numbers for Tuesday nights drawing of Mega Millions are: 8, 14, 17, 20, 39, and the Mega Ball number is 7.

The jackpot is estimated to climb to $1 billion for Friday's drawing if there is no winner in Tuesday night's drawing.

Tickets are only $1.00 each and available at participating lottery retailers.

Mega Millions is played in 43 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
