The Mega Millions jackpot has now reached $550 million since no winner held the winning ticket Friday night. After multiple drawings failing to produce a winner since Oct. 1, Friday night's lottery was up to $425 million -- the fifth largest lottery jackpot ever. USA Today reports Dec. 14 that the Mega Millions jackpot now stands as the second largest jackpot for a lucky winner.
The numbers drawn Friday night were: 19, 24, 26, 27, 70 and Mega Ball 12.
The $550 million prize will be drawn Tuesday night. If someone wins the $550 million jackpot, that would net the winner $295 for the cash option. Not a bad way to finish 2013 and begin 2014.
What are the chances of winning the Mega Millions $550 million jackpot? They are 1 in 259 million, according to Mega Millions website. The report revealed that Virginia's lottery ticket sales were about 600% above normal and 400% above normal in Oregon on Friday.
The Mega Millions jackpot hasn't seen a winner in 21 straight drawings. The first largest was $656 million three ticket holders won in March 2012.
Despite the insane odds of winning a lottery jackpot, there's no shortage of lottery tickets being sold. Everyone has the same chance and eventually someone will get ridiculously lucky. Players go into it hoping to win and thinking, "Someone has to win, why not me?"
