'Mega May' begins today on the 3DS eShop

It's a big month and the end of a long wait for Mega Man fans! The original Mega Man title for Game Boy, Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge, was released for the 3DS Virtual Console way back at the initial launch of the 3DS eShop, in June of 2011. Fans were left wondering for another two years when the rest of the beloved franchise's Game Boy titles would be made available on the 3DS Virtual Console -- until June of last year, when Capcom announced at E3 that the rest of the games would be released on the 3DS eShop before the end of the year.

That unfortunately never came to pass, but better late than never: today marks the start of "Mega May" on the 3DS eShop! Each Thursday this month, one of the six remaining Mega Man titles for Game Boy will be made available for the 3DS Virtual Console. Capcom launched a fan poll a couple of weeks ago to determine which title would be released first, and today we know the results of that poll: Mega Man Xtreme went live on the 3DS eShop this morning.

Mega Man Xtreme, originally released for the Game Boy Color in 2001, marked the portable debut of the Mega Man X series and served as a sort of combined remix of the first two console games in the series, Mega Man X and Mega Man X2.

Along with the launch of Mega Man Xtreme to kick off Mega May, Nintendo also revealed today the entire month's schedule of Mega Man releases on the 3DS eShop, which is as follows:

May 1st: Mega Man Xtreme ($4.99)
May 8th: Mega Man II and Mega Man III
May 15th: Mega Man IV
May 22nd: Mega Man V
May 29th: Mega Man Xtreme 2

Beyond today's launch of Xtreme, it seems the order of the rest of the releases has nothing to do with the results of Capcom's fan poll, but no matter: fans have waited a long time for these games, and they're finally coming. Of particular note are Mega Man IV and V, which are regarded by many fans as two of the best games in the series. However, physical copies of both games are exceedingly rare and hard to track down these days, making their digital release particularly notable and exciting for fans.

Mega Man Xtreme is available now on the 3DS eShop for $4.99.
