According to a May 11 in Daily Mail.com another church and church leader are being named in an alleged sex scandal. David Powers, a director at The Rock church in San Diego has been accused of sexual harassment and inappropriate contact by women staying at a rehab center affiliated with the church. Thus far, 6 women have come forward with allegations against Powers.
The Rock Church has been in existence since 2000. The church is pastored by Miles McPherson, and boasts some 12,000 members. The church has faced legal challenges in the past for issues related to adequate parking and improper land usage.
The church has also been praised for its diligence and commitment to community service. The church recorded almost 250,000 community service hours in 2011. In the same year, the church gave away almost 100,000 toys through its Toys for Joy program.
Sober Living offers separate facilities for men and women. It has a 0 tolerance policy on sobriety. It offers a number of sponsored events, but requires those who check in to stay for a minimum of 90 days.
One Christian viewed the church as overextended in all the wrong areas. ”I am not against the church working with other organizations in an effort to advance the gospel. However, television shows and not for profit businesses leaves the church exposed and susceptible to just about anything. Jesus asked the disciples who they thought He was, and they responded. If someone were to ask the church that same question, I am not sure what the answer would be. And that is because the church has too many identities”
The lawsuit, filed in San Diego church, names Powers, his wife, ABC’s “Sober Living,” and Rock Church Ministries.
Do the allegations against Powers change your view about the church? If asked your opinion of the allegations, what would your answer or response be?
