If you are a huge modern art fan, you know Peggy Guggenheim as the angel who discovered, popularized or rescued much of the most important work to come out of the mid-20th Century art world.

If you are a reader, it’s more likely that you know Peggy Guggenheim as a bohemian heiress who wanders in and out of other people’s biographies. Her uncle was Solomon R. Guggenheim, the gold magnate and art collector for whom the famous Frank Lloyd Wright-designed museum is named. Her father was a more modest millionaire who went down with the Titanic when she was only 14. Her list of lovers included the likes of Miro, Dali, Picasso and even Samuel Beckett. And she personally rescued a beloved collection of invaluable modern art (and more than a few of the artists) by escaping from Paris only a few days before the Nazis marched in.

For all of these reasons, you can look forward to seeing the Performance Network Theatre’s production of Woman Before a Glass, by Lanie Robertson. This one-woman show stars acclaimed actress and singer Naz Edwards as the eccentric heiress and avid art lover, Peggy Guggenheim. Edwards, who won rave reviews from critics and local audiences for her portrayal of Audrey II in PNT’s Little Shop of Horrors, is just the sort of larger-than-life actress to bring us a convincing portrait of the outspoken, convention-flaunting Peggy Guggenheim. The play is directed by Malcolm Tulip, who also directed Amadeus, and the currently running, brilliant production of The Seafarer.

Performances will begin August 5 and run through September 5, 2010. Weekly performances are Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m., with 3 p.m. matinees on Saturday August 21 and September 4.

Tickets can be ordered at the Performance Network Box Office at 734-663-0681, online or by coming to the Performance Network Theatre (120 East Huron St., Ann Arbor, 48104) Monday-Saturday 11-6 or one hour before a performance. Tickets are priced at $22 - $41, with discounts available for seniors, members, students and groups. Thursday, August 5 is the Pay-what-you-can performance with a suggested donation of $10.
