Meet St. Arnold Santo, a black kolsch from St. Arnold Brewery

Saint Arnold Brewing Company, Houston’s largest and Texas’ oldest craft brewing operation, has announced the release of its newest year- round beer, St. Arnold Santo. The beer will be released officially on Thursday, October 20 and it will be the sixth beer in the St. Arnold regular, non- seasonal product lineup.

As many Houston craft beer fans may recall, St. Arnold Santo was originally scheduled for release in early September, but the release had to be delayed due to quality issues. St. Arnold brewers felt it didn’t taste quite right and rather than release a flawed product, they wisely (although I am sure, painfully) decided to dump the entire batch and start over. A few modifications were made to the mash temperature and the wheat malt was replaced with Munich malt, resulting in a batch of beer now worthy of consumption.

“When we set out to create Santo, the idea was to create the beer we always wished we would get when we ordered a dark Mexican lager to go with our enchiladas,” said Saint Arnold Founder/Brewer Brock Wagner. “While we were a little embarrassed about announcing that we decided to dump our first batch, we are happy with the decision, especially given the beer that we are ready to release now.  Our brewing team has been thoroughly enjoying this new version. We haven’t waited for the release date to tap some for ourselves.”

So, what can craft beer fans expect with this new product? According to St. Arnold, Santo is a black Kölsch, light in body and dark in color. It utilizes Kolsch yeast and thus has taste characteristics similar to those of an authentic Kolsch style beer. The beer is brewed using two- row barley, pilsner malted barley, Munich malt, black malt, and Hallertau Hersbrucker hops. The result is a beer light in body with a dark malt flavor and a low level of bitterness. Vital stats on St. Arnold Santo show a bitterness of 17 IBU and alcohol content by volume of 4.6 percent.

Santo will be available on tap at many area drinking and dining establishments where other St. Arnold is presently sold and also in six packs and cases (12 oz. bottles in both) at retail outlets.
