Denver may have said goodbye to several theatre companies over the past few years, but it is clear that nothing can stop the artistic endeavors of truly committed theatre people. Amidst one of the toughest times for this community, yet another new theatre company is born. Silhouette Theatre Company is a new company that is under the watchful eye of Spotlight Theatre Company’s artistic director, Pat Payne.
The first production for this new company is Neil LaBute’s The Shape of Things, directed by Pat Payne. An appropriate selection for a company that promises to bring works that challenge the body and mind, or as they say “be challenged, be changed.” Payne may be one of the busiest directors and producers in Denver, so why start a new company? Well, according to Payne, “They say necessity is the mother of invention. Usually the theatre comes first and then the show – but this is the exact opposite. The show was promised to happen at another company, and then it was taken away. So I am committed to making it happen.”

Artistic differences aside, Silhouette is committed to providing a different theatre going experience for the patrons at The John Hand Theater. They want to be “a place that will strive to tell challenging stories that will long be talked about by audiences because what they saw made them think and maybe even changed them a little bit,” explains Paul Jaquith a member of Silhouette Theatre Company and one of the actors in the inaugural production. “Shape of Things is the perfect inaugural production for us. It deals with an issue most people deal with on a day to day basis, body image. Most of us wonder what we would look like if we lost a little weight, changed our clothing style, had plastic surgery, etc. This play will hopefully cause a lot of people to identify with Adam as he changes. Also, without giving it away, there are some major morality issues that will hopefully make the audience talk about the play for hours afterwards.”
The John Hand Theatre is already home to two fantastic companies, and it is a welcome addition to see Silhouette joining them. As Joanna Jaquith, another cast member of The Shape of Things, explains, “With each show we hope to push the envelope a little further, but for now we will bring a show that is honest, witty, and yes challenging.”
