Listening to Seattle’s stoner/sludge trio Serial Hawk, the word that comes to mind is “saturation.” Or to steal from an old Palmolive commercial, “you’re soaking in it.” The trio manage to invert their energy into every song. Their most recent EP, “Buried In the Gray” sums up in title and sonic presence the down-tuned wall of oppressive ambiance the band manifests through each performance. Serial Hawk began as a creative seed planted in the cranium of vocalist and guitarist Will Bassin. Soon bassist Adam Holbrook would join and the collective completed with the addition of drummer Justin Rodda.
Last winter the band recorded “Buried in the Gray” which was mastered by Adam Pike (Red Fang, White Orange) at Toadhouse Recording Studios. The four track EP contains nearly 30 minutes of plodding riffage and sludgy rhythms backing anguished vocal laments and caliginous bellows.
The band will begin its winter tour with a home date on March 1 and Boise on March 2. The journey will take them as far east as Chicago and St. Louis, before swinging down through the southwest and back up the west coast to Portland. You can find all the dates here.
