Remember when we discussed the X-Arcade Tankstick? Well here is another little retro PC gaming gem, straight out of left field. Meet Retrode - the best USB adapter for your 16-bit cartridge computer gaming fantasies.
The Retrode is an adapter that utilizes both SNES and SEGA cartridges from the days of old. All you have to do is pick your favorite SNES or SEGA emulator, plug in the Retrode via USB and insert your cartridge of choice to start enjoying the nostalgia. What separates this adapter from others is the fact that it also allows you to plug in and use your original controllers.
Currently the Retrode only supports two old school gaming consoles but since many people were asking about adapters to plug into it – they decided to show you how to make some that are for use only with the Retrode device. The Plug-ins featured are for Nintendo 64, GameBoy, Atari 2600 and the TG-16 – Turbografx-16. The Atari 2600 and TG-16 are used with the SNES slots, while the N64/GB are used with the SEGA slot. Retrode insists, “These adapters are made for use in the Retrode only. I promise they will NOT work in any other device. In order to prevent damage a nd disappointment, please don’t even think of trying it.” Best to heed the warning if you plan on using the adapters. More information on that here.
Although this is a stellar idea and certainly the sleekest design to come out yet for retro adapters - the price tag is rather hefty. At $85 you can own your very own Retrode due to ship out the beginning of February. Lets just hope the price comes down because this is a wicked little piece.
