"Where the surf meets the turf, down at Old Del Mar..." This is the season for horse racing, and one of the most unique places to go is to the Del Mar race track. Going on now through September 4, the Del Mar races are a great place to have fun, relax, and maybe do a bit of betting.
Options to eat: You can certainly dine at the race track, but another great option that many locals prefer is to dine at Zinc Café in Solana Beach. Try a personal sized pizza or one of the salads and then head over to the free Del Mar shuttle running between 5:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. to and from the Del Mar race track (and saving you $10 on parking at the fairgrounds).
Options to entertain at the Del Mar Scene: A full roster of concerts on the track ties in the fun after dark. This Saturday, for example, you can purchase tickets for Weezer. And of course, you can place your bets on the horse of your choice. Not sure of the lingo and how to do so? Use the Del Mar Racing 411 cheat sheet as your guide.
Options to create some great family memories: You don't have to bet on the horses to have a great time at the races. Go to the smaller track near the stables and see the horses before they are in the starting gate. There are even opportunities for children to pet one of the non-racing horses (one rider is placed on the track to assist with any horses that break away from the jockey, and buddy horses walk with the race horses before they enter the starting gate).
The Del Mar race track provides a fun and relaxing pastime with options for everyone. Be sure to meet at the races and be ready to kick back and enjoy.
