ABC's Red Widow is full of characters who are living double lives, of sorts, and lying to each other (or themselves), deceiving the ones they love, all while claiming to put the family first. But Luther (Luke Goss) is a rare exception, a much simpler character who truly does cherish this adopted family of sorts in which he found himself. Hired by Marta's (Radha Mitchell) father, after the murder of her husband, he is asked to basically be her bodyguard, and he does it, no questions asked.
"He’s a kind of very selfless character, and I think he’s driven by his loyalty," Goss said to LA TV Insider Examiner when we were with him on set in Vancouver.*
"Andrei, Marta’s father, brought him off the street, and I think he feels like that’s his family. He doesn’t have a family of his own, so the Petrovs have become that family. But there’s that line. I think he knows he’ll never be a part of the family truly [because] he’s not Bratva."
Goss considers Luther to be "devoid of any agenda," there to serve and protect, so to speak, and though he admitted he thinks Luther has feelings for Marta, they are not of the romantic kind but rather to care about her well being. Where things get tricky, then, are when he observes some of the things she feels she has to do to keep her family safe. Marta will be crossing a moral line, and Luther, bearing witness, may see his own tested, as well. For Goss, it has always been important for his legacy as a man and as an actor not to take roles that challenge his own sense of morality (click here to watch him talk more about that), but Luther doesn't have such freedom of choice.
"I think he really doesn’t like the negotiation that’s going on. I think he would like to expedite that situation because he just sees her getting more ensconced in that problem. But he works for Andre. As much as he’s there to protect Marta, he’s still under orders from her father, and he can’t really act without orders," Goss said.
"He’s certainly dealing with that constant frustration of having to take a deep breath, knowing that he can’t act without authority."
Luther's loyalty is the number one thing he prides himself on, but Goss shared that it will get tested throughout the season, and one thing he noted was that the reveal of who actually killed Marta's husband was a "huge deal" for every cast member and would be for every viewer, as well. It might even be enough to change loyalty and perception after the fact.
