Hollywood superstar Leonardo DiCaprio, who brought his mom as his date to the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday night, is auctioning off a chance to meet him at an upcoming Hollywood movie premiere.
DiCaprio, who stars as J. Edgar Hoover in Clint Eastwood's biopic of the former FBI chief, ranks up with George Clooney as the least likely movie stars to need a date to anything. DiCaprio put himself up on the auction block to benefit Sean Penn's J/P Haitian Relief Organization in its effort to build homes for earthquake refugees. All of the funds from the Cinema for Peace "Help Haiti Home" online auction go directly to the relief organization.
The premiere, after party and meet-and-greet with DiCaprio is valued at $25,000. The bidding was up to about $4,000 as of Wednesday, but is expected to skyrocket as the February 9 deadline draws near.
Cinema for Peace presented activist Di Caprio a "Green Oscar" -- International Green Film Award -- in 2009 for his commitment to ecoogical awareness and the fight against global warming as well as his efforts in promoting peace and tolerance in the global film business. Former Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev presented the trophy to DiCaprio. He also received a $250,000 donation for an environmental fundation or related film project. Penn received the award this year, at a ceremony in Los Angeles last Saturday.
The winning bidder in the "Help Haiti Home" auction will receive two tickets to an upcoming premiere and after party along with the opportunity to meet DiCaprio.
Also on the auction block:
- Meet Madonna at the premiere of "W.E." in New York on January 23 (closes today).
- Have coffee with Soleil Moon Frye in Los Angeles (date TBD)
- Meet Heidi Klum, Tim Gunn, and the Project Runway judges as a VIP guest at a taping this summer
There are a number of other auction prizes, including a spot at the honorees' table at the Cinema for Peace gala in Berlin on February 13; an original chunk of "Flying Hope" from the Berlin Wall; a "Power of Peace' triptych featuring Nelson Mandela, the Dalai Lama, and Aung San Suu Kyi; a signed and personalized guitar from Metallica; and an opportunity to practice your cooking skills (and savor a meal for four) with acclaimed chefs Jon Shook and Vinny Dotolo.
