The National Museum of African Art is committed to presenting many facets of the African continent through its art exhibits, through film and through cultural events. The museum has hosted a book club featuring African authors and even had a party to show the World Cup finals that took place in South Africa.
Author Dinaw Mengestu will read from his recent novel, How to Read the Air this Saturday at the National Museum of African Art. Mengestu has drawn on his own background as an Ethiopian immigrant to craft this heartbreaking tale of redemption that moves between Africa to America.
Dinaw Megestu, a native of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, left his homeland at the age of two years old. He is a graduate of Georgetown University and earned an MFA in fiction from Columbia University.
His first novel, The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears (2007) was very well received. Among its honors, the novel was named as a New York Times Notable Book.
Megestu now lives in Paris with his family, but he is quite familiar with the DC area since he lived here and it was the setting for his first novel, which examined the lives of African immigrants living in a poor African-American neighborhood.
