Mariela Kleiner’s new book, Meet Einstein, is introducing a new generation to Albert Einstein and the wonderful, wacky world of Science. Kleiner not only teaches children about the science around them, but shows them how they, too, can be like Einstein. Science is all around us, and scientists come in all ages.
The recommended reading age for Meet Einstein is 2-5 years old, and so I enlisted my team of young reporters for their thoughts on why you should pick up a copy for the youngsters in your life. Ava J. Fitzgerald, 9 years old today (Happy Birthday!!!) and the resident young Einstein in my life, along with her savvy brother, 4, M. Harper Fitzgerald happily poured over the pages of the book, traipsing through the world of science and possibility.
“I love the introduction and the illustrations are great!” Ava reported. A budding artist, Ava knows a thing or two about illustration. The pictures that walk the story along are engaging and wonderfully done by Viviana Garofoli. Harper, who renovates furniture with his Mom and enjoys studying the things that draw him in, “just really liked it – especially because it talks about light bulbs!”
While the book was magnificently written and illustrated, there was only one wish among them: for more. Perhaps Kleiner’s next book will be for an older audience, inspired by tweens wishing to get to know Einstein better, and follow his footsteps into the next wave of scientific creativity.
Meet Einstein, he’s happy to help every child make the connections with science in everything they see and do, and teach them that science is all around them. (Meet Einstein also includes a section for parents to learn about Einstein, so they can join their children in exploring the concepts in this book.)
Meet Einstein is the winner of the 2010 National Indie Excellence Award for best children's picture book. Be sure to look for Meet Einstein when it releases, March 1, 2011.
