Sprint Cup Series driver Carl Edwards has back-flipped his way into the hearts of NASCAR fans over the last 11 seasons, and in 2015, he joins Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin and Matt Kenseth at Joe Gibbs Racing. Learn more about the newest member of JGR’s Sprint Cup Series team here.

“Cousin Carl,” a/k/a Carl Michael Edwards II, was born August 15th, 1979 in Columbia, Missouri. The “Cousin Carl” moniker comes from the fact that he is a first cousin once removed of NASCAR veteran Ken Schrader. Edwards was well known for handing out business cards to teams offering his driving services before his career took off.

Edwards made his first NASCAR starts in 2002, running seven Truck Series races for MB Motorsports as well as a Nationwide Series race for Bost Motorsports. In 2003, he signed on with Roush Racing as a full-time competitor in the Truck Series, winning three races and the Rookie of the Year award. Edwards made his Cup Series debut in August 2004, replacing Jeff Burton in the vacated No. 99 for the rest of the season.

In 2005, Edwards competed full-time in both the Cup and Nationwide Series. In March of that year, he became the first driver to win Cup and Busch races in the same weekend – the wins at Atlanta Motor Speedway also happened to be his first wins in both series. In 2007, he won the Nationwide Series title and the Prelude to the Dream charity race, and in 2008 he finished second in Cup Series points. In 2011, Edwards won his first Sprint All-Star Race, and finished second again in Cup Series points, losing a tie-breaker to Tony Stewart.

To date, Edwards has earned 23 Sprint Cup Series wins, 38 Nationwide Series wins and six wins in the Camping World Truck Series.

Edwards married the former Dr. Katherine “Kate” Downey on January 3rd, 2009; they have two children, Anne Katherine and Michael Lee. He has taken on some acting roles, most notably appearing in the TV series 24.
