When Brian “Lucky” Kebic first hooked up with Executive Golf and its Slammer Tour, he was blown away by the total package of services and events offered by the virtual golf club.
“EG extended a special offer to the members of the old NDHQ Golf Association when it ceased to operate in 2007 and I decided to gave it a try,” said Kebic. “I was impressed by the overall organization and found that EG was more then just an online golf booking system. From golf trips, to special events, along with competitive and non-competitive leagues, they have something for everyone. As someone who loves the competitive side of golf, the Slammer Tour was just a natural fit.”
The retired military man took up the game in 1972 during a tour of duty at HMCS Gloucester, which is now the location of the Greely Legion on Mitch Owens Road.
“In those days we were a long way from everything and we had nothing but time on our hands during the weekends,” said Kebic. “So, just about every Saturday and Sunday, from April until November, I would rise early, pick up some clubs from the gym, make the 30-minute walk over to the Poplar Grove golf course and play until the sun went down. It was a fabulous year.”
The right-handed player, who has become a solid golfer, picked up his “Lucky” handle after some guys he played with often tagged him with it because of his knack for beating the odds after errant shots headed toward trees or hazards.
“It was given to me by a regular weekend foursome that just couldn't take how I always seemed to get the ‘good bounce’," said Kebic. “If my ball was going into the trees, it would kick back out into the fairway. If it went into a hazard, I would still have a way out.”
Kebic plays in EG’s Champions League at Golf-O-Max on Tuesday mornings during the winter and over time has rolled in to the co-ordinator’s role.
“It gives me the chance to play golf every week with a fantastic bunch of guys,” Kebic said. “We all have a variety of interests and life backgrounds that we get to share with one another while enjoying our common love for the game of golf. We always welcome new players to the league, which is designed for players of all ability levels.”
Kebic became a member of the hole-in-one club in 2007 when he aced No. 5 at Metcalfe Golf Club.
He’s also had some significant Slammer Tour highlights.
“I was fortunate to be a part of the 12-person Team East's Commish's Cup victories in 2011 and 2012. Sweet!” he said.
