Two great places to chill are St. Mary's Garden next to Holy Family Church and The Japan Society, both on 47th st between 1st and 2nd avenues in Manhattan on the north side of the street.
If you're looking for things to do in New York City that help you relax and actually forget the city, try these free places to relax.
St. Mary's is a small but it's beautifully landscaped with a bridge over a water garden pond. I am not Catholic and I usually feel like Churches are trying to lure me into something, but this garden has a generous vibe.
A few doors down at 333 east 47 is Japan Society. They have great cultural performances and exhibits and the lobby is a lesson in clean, soothing design that includes a koi-free koi pond and a bamboo garden. Go in, sit down on the bench and let your tension go. The lobby is free.
Both spots are also near the UN, so when you want a great way to relax in new york that's free, check out St. Mary's meditation garden, complete with water pond.
