Medical marijuana usage from ancient Egypt to Obama's medical marijuana statements

Clipart of a marijuana leaf

First recorded use of marijuana for medical purposes was in ancient Egypt. It was used to treat inflammation of the eye and used for some ailments of the uterus. In India medical marijuana was used as far back as 800 B.C. for congestion. China's ancient herbal practitioners prescribed marijuana for a variety of conditions and was written up in China's ancient medicinal literature around 1st century B.C.  By the 3rd century BC marijuana was being used as an analgesic for the pain during surgery. In the 19th century marijuana was the standard painkiller prescribed for menstrual cramps. From 1840 to 1900 over 100 medical papers were published recommending marijuana as a medicine.  In other countries marijuana has been successfully prescribed for  the pain associated with arthritis, rheumatism, childbirth, and as an aid in lowering blood pressure.Clinical studies from 1975 till today show that marijuana has many medical applications. These clinical studies validate the ancient  and modern herbalists applications of marijuana as a medicinal herb. Modern research has shown marijuana to have anti-inflammatory properties and contain an analgesic as effective as Codeine. Marijuana is currently being prescribed to many patients that have chronic pain, glaucoma, cancer, cerebral palsy, muscular sclerosis ,nerve pain, spinal cord injuries, loss of appetite, and epilepsy. Some clinical studies have validated ancient herbalists usage of marijuana has an antidepressant. The best part of using marijuana medicinally is that it has no proven long term side effects.(unlike currently prescribed pharmaceutical drugs)

President Obama decided that the federal government would honor our Constitutions declarations of individual states rights regarding those states that have legalized marijuana for medical application. Obama has publicly stated that the federal government would not interfere with medical marijuana users as long as "they conform to state law."

This herbalist's opinion? It's about time!

Writers note:The University of Mississippi has been the long term supplier of marijuana for federally funded medical research on marijuana.

Thanks Faith for this important Marijuana update. It's long overdue for this ancient weed be recognized for it's multiple healing properties. It's also a crying shame and waste of tax payer dollars that Marijuana users are incarcerated costing Tax payers $35,000.00 a year.. And the user winds up with a record which can impair their future..

Thank goodness the State I live in finally got smart with this.

No relation to Barbara, sadly. I'm for marijuana use in medical circumstances, but still ambiguous as to whether its wider use should be legalised. Using ancient and historical accounts is not, however, any aid to legalisation. The Mayans enjoyed a spot of decapitation, for example, which has carried on in countries ever since. Does this make it any more acceptable? Likewise torture. There are ways to promote marijuana use but this ain't one.

so i'm pretty sure the mayans didn't treat their patients by chopping their heads off or by any lessers means making them watch a decapitation. your example doesn't really fit as it is not a medicinal treatment at all. it was a form of entertainment. i really don't see why marijuana isn't legal EVERYWHERE in this day and age. alcohol causes more deaths than weed. i think the government should stop wasting the tax payers money and stop making pot heads into criminals...all we are trying to do is expand our minds and make the world a happier place.
