According to the Champions Tour website, Rocco Mediate of Greensburg, Pennsylvania has a one stroke lead after the first round of the Shaw Charity Classic at the Canyon Meadows Golf and Country Club in Calgary on Friday.
Mediate leads 58 year-old Canadian Rod Spittle of St. Catharines, Ontario along with an American trio of Bart Bryant, Jeff Sluman and Bobby Clampett by a stroke.
Mediate shot a first round score of -8 after recording two eagles in the last four holes. Mediate is best known for losing in a playoff to Tiger Woods at the 2008 U.S. Open in Torrey Pines. Interestingly the Woods' victory was his last major title. Mediate is also looking for his second Champions Tour victory this year as he won the Allianz Championship in Florida this past February.
There are plenty of other golfers still in contention. Major champions Sandy Lyle of Scotland and Craig Stadler of the United States along with fellow Americans Michael Allen, Scott Hoch and South African David Frost are two shots back at -6, while 1996 PGA Championship winner Mark Brooks of the United States, along with fellow Americans Joel Edwards, Kirk Triplett, Jay Don Blake and Tom Byrum are three strokes back at -5.
