This year the 44th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Convocation will take place in the Rose Embly McCoy auditorium on the campus of Jackson State University. It will take place on Friday, January 18, 2013 at 10 a.m.
Reena Evers-Everette is the daughter of slain civil rights activist Medgar Evers who was the field secretary for the NAACP in Mississippi. She witnessed his murder at their home when she was eight years old.
Her mother Myrlie Evers, also a civil rights activist, founded the Medgar and Myrlie Evers Institute to continue the fight for social and political justice for all people. She founded the institute in 1998 in order to preserve and continue the legacy of her husband's life's work.
Reena Evers-Everette serves as the Executive Director for this organization. The institute will also stage several activities and exhibits this year in honor of the 50th anniversary of Medgar Evers assassination.
The event is free and open to the public. For more information on it, visit: www.jsums.edu/margaretwalker
