Kelly Voss, 42, of 2 Little Treasure Drive, is awaiting arraignment Oct. 28 on a child endangerment charge at First District Court in Central Islip.
Police said they responded to Voss’ home at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday after neighbors called 911 to report the infant was crying in a basement apartment. When officers arrived to the scene, they realized the apartment was empty, a news release said.
After forcing their way into the home, they found Voss’ 13-month-old son alone in a crib. Officials said the child was lying in a soiled diaper.
Police Officer Dena Miceli reportedly comforted the child and checked his health while waiting with a neighbor for the boy’s mother to arrive. The infant was later released to his mother's care.
Police said Voss was arrested after he returned to the home about 40 minutes after police arrived. Authorities said he had scheduled weekend visitation and was supposed to be caring for the child when he left the home.
Suffolk County Child Protective Services was notified of the incident.
Voss was held overnight at the Sixth Precinct in Selden and was scheduled to be brought Monday morning to court for arraignment.
