Medela supports mothers of NICU babies

See also

Most expectant moms don't prepare for, or anticipate, their newborns being in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Breastfeeding a preemie can be one of the unplanned and challenging experiences for a mom. Through its line of hospital products and education, Medela supports mothers of NICU babies in providing breastmilk to their little ones, which offers them all of the valuable hormones, antibodies and other protective factors found in human milk to fight infection and become stronger.

Medela is expanding its NICU services and solutions for at-risk infants by announcing the signing of an agreement to acquire the enteral feeding assets of Acacia, Inc., a company that designs and produces a line of high-quality neonatal feeding devices. This will allow Medela to provide a holistic solution to the mother, baby and NICU staff, further promoting and enhancing the use of human milk for the most at-risk babies. Since 2005, the American Academy of Pediatrics has had a policy statement calling for hospitals and physicians to recommend human milk for premature and other high risk infants.

Just this past February, Medela recognized two hospital NICUs for their best practices in increasing human milk consumption among their preemies and NICU babies. If you'd like to read more about this Medela program, please visit
