Medal count for Winter Olympics 2014 Day 5: USA gains 2 more

The 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia concluded day five of competition on Tuesday with the total medal standings increasing for many nations including the United States.

Though the top five nations have changed some since the conclusion of the previous day’s events, after Tuesday’s results Norway still led all nations with 11 medals total; Canada has won nine medals, the Netherlands has eight total medals and the United States and Russia rounded out the top five countries in the standings with seven medals each.

The top five leaders of the gold medal race are Norway, Canada and Germany (four each), the Netherlands (three) and the United States and Switzerland tied for fifth place (two each).

The United States gained two medals on Tuesday, one silver medal by Devin Logan in ladies’ ski slopestyle and one bronze medal by Erin Hamlin in women’s singles luge.

United States favorite Shaun White failed to medal in the men’s halfpipe snowboard finals, just missing a medal as he placed fourth behind Iouri Podladtchikov of Switzerland, Ayumu Hirano of Japan and Taku Hiraoka of Japan, respectively.

Medals awarded on Tuesday, with gold medal country winners in parenthesis, were within competitions in women’s 10 km pursuit biathlon (Belarus), ladies’ sprint free cross country (Norway), men’s sprint free cross country (Norway), ladies’ ski slopestyle in freestyle skiing (Canada), ladies’ 500 m speed skating (South Korea), women’s singles luge (Germany), men’s halfpipe snowboard (Switzerland) and ladies’ normal hill ski jumping (Germany).

Non-medal round events on Tuesday were held in men’s curling, women’s curling, pairs short program figure skating and women’s ice hockey.

Medal round competition scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 12 includes events in alpine skiing, figure skating, luge, nordic combined, snowboard and speed skating.

Tuesday was the fourth day of medal round competition, though it was the fifth official day of the Olympic Games, including Friday’s Opening Ceremony full of spectacle, glitz and pyrotechnics. In addition, on Thursday prior to the opening ceremony many athletes competed in preliminary non-medal round events.
