Medal count 2014 Winter Olympics Day 13: USA’s Ligety wins gold

At the end of competition on Wednesday in the 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia the United Stated moved up in both the gold medal race and for now leads all countries in the total medal race with a gold medal win in the alpine skiing men’s giant slalom as well as silver and a bronze medal wins in women’s bobsleigh.

The top five nations leading the total medal race as of the end of Wednesday’s events are the United States with 23 medals, the Russian Federation and the Netherlands with 22 medals each, Norway with 20 medals and Canada with 18 medals.

The top six nations leading the gold medal race are Norway with nine, Germany with eight, the United States with seven and the Russian Federation, the Netherlands and Switzerland with six each.

Medals awarded on Wednesday, with gold medal country winners in parenthesis, were in men’s giant slalom in alpine skiing (United States), 2 x 6 km women + 2 x 7.5 km men mixed relay in biathlon (Norway), women’s bobsleigh (Canada), ladies’ team sprint classic in cross country (Norway), men’s team sprint classic in cross country (Finland), ladies’ parallel giant slalom in snowboard (Switzerland), men’s parallel giant slalom in snowboard (Russian Federation) and ladies’ 5000 m speed skating (Czech Republic).

Ted Ligety of the United States captured the gold medal in the alpine skiing men’s’ giant slalom on Wednesday. In addition, Elana Meyers and Lauryn Williams won the silver medal and Jamie Greubel and Aja Evans won the bronze medal in women’s bobsleigh.

Finland doubled its total medal wins to four on Wednesday winning a gold medal in the men’s team sprint classic in cross country and a silver medal in the ladies’ team sprint classic in cross country.

Non-medal round events were held in men’s curling, women’s curling, ladies short program in figure skating and men’s ice hockey.

Medal round events scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 20 include competitions in women’s curling, ladies’ free skating in figure skating, men’s ski cross in freestyle skiing, ladies ski halfpipe in freestyle skiing, women’s ice hockey and team Gundersen LH / 4 x 5 km cross country.
