Medal count 2014 Winter Olympics Day 11: USA wins ice dance gold

After the end of competition in the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games on Monday, a gold medal in figure skating ice dance and a bronze medal in two-man bob-sled moved the United States to the top of the total medal standings in a tie with Russia.

The top five nations leading the total medal race as of the end of Monday’s events are the Russian Federation and the United States with 18 each, the Netherlands with 17 and Norway and Canada with 15 each.

The top seven nations leading the gold medal race are Germany with eight and the Russian Federation, the Netherlands, the United States, Norway, Switzerland and Belarus all with five gold medals each.

Medals awarded on Monday, with gold medal country winners in parenthesis, were in women’s 12.5 km mass start biathlon (Belarus), two-man bobsleigh (Russian Federation), ice dance in figure skating (United States), men’s aerials in freestyle skiing (Belarus) and men’s team ski jumping (Germany).

Meryl Davis and Charlie White of the United States won the gold medal in ice dance in figure skating. In addition, the United States’ Steven Holcomb and Steven Langton won the bronze medal in the two-man bobsleigh.

The men’s 15 km mass start biathlon and the men’s snowboard were postponed until Tuesday due to fog.

Non-medal round events were held in men’s curing round robin sessions and women’s curling round robin sessions, as well as in women’s ice hockey playoff semifinals where the United States women’s hockey team beat Sweden 6-1.

Medal round events scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 18 include competition in alpine skiing, biathlon, freestyle skiing, Nordic combined, short track, snowboard and speed skating.
