Meb Keflezighi won the 2009 New York City Marathon this morning and completed it with a personal best time of 2:09:15. An American hasn't won the NYC Marathon since 1982.
Meb Keflezighi, 34, emigrated from East Africa to San Diego, California in 1987 and became a US citizen in 1998. Keflezighi has been a runner most of his life and won a silver medal at the 2004 Olympics.
Keflezighi was named "the top US distance runner from 10 km to the marathon" by USA Track & Field. While he was a student UCLA, he won four NCAA titles in one year: NCAA Cross Country Championship, Indoor 5,000 meters Championship, and double NCAA victories in the 5000 and the 10,000 meters Outdoor Championships in 1997, according to the RunMeb website.
Derartu Tulu, 37 from Ethiopia was the first female to finish the NYC Marathon this morning with a completion time of 2:28:52. Keflezighi and Tulu will each receive $130,000 in prize money.
In comparison, the winner of the 2009 Salt Lake City Marathon this year was Joseph Mutinda with a completion time of 2:16:38, and the top female time was from Russian elite runner Nadezda Tuptova who finished with a time of 2:47:49.
