Although measles was declared ”eliminated” in the western hemisphere back in 2000, it has been making a surprising comeback throughout Europe, including Great Britain, and Israel, as well as here in the USA, where 98% of those infected were never vaccinated against the disease.

In fact, the CDC now reports that cases of measles have tripled here during the past 13 years, with 60 diagnosed in two religious Jewish communities in Brooklyn, where vaccines are discouraged for religious reasons. The outbreak there began with a 17-year old who contracted the disease during a trip to London and spread the virus upon returning home.

Two other cases were reported in Nassau County, New York after two other youths picked up the virus in Turkey this summer.

Measles, aka rubeola is a highly contagious respiratory infection spread through contact with fluids from an infected person’s nose or mouth. Symptoms include skin rash, fever, cough, runny nose and red eyes. While the incubation period is generally 9-12 days after initial exposure, people generally remain infectious both 2-4 days before the rash breaks out, as well as 2-5 days afterwards.

Although the CDC reports that most complications from the disease can range from relatively mild, such as diarrhea, if not treated they can progress to more serious ones including pneumonia, are relatively common, ranging from mild and less serious complications such as diarrhea to more serious ones such as pneumonia, inflammation of the middle ear, scarring of the cornea and acute encephalitis and even death.
