Measles outbreak confirmed: Cruise crew infected by virus

A sea cruise is supposed to be fun, relaxing and take your mind off all the stresses of the world. It is after all a vacation.

Measles have been confirmed aboard a cruise ship!

A cruise ship sailed out of the Mediterranean Sea according to the Italian public health authorities on Feb. 27 with a crew of forty from the Costa Pacifica in Civitavecchia, Italy. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) released a report called a Rapid Risk Assessment on March 6 stating the members of the crew were all tested and their urine samples all showed measles were present.

Before they knew that there was a measles outbreak one of the crew members left in ship in Genoa who was suffering from respiratory symptoms as well as a skin rash. An investigation by the Italians was put into action immediately. The results documented nine people being hospitalized in Rome, Italy. Out of those nine people, seven of them were confirmed to having measles after being tested. There were six other people who were also about the ship that were suspected of contracting the same illness and were sent to the hospital for observation and testing to be sure.

The cruise was supposed to be a wonderful excursion in the Mediterranean Sea that visited six ports which included Italy, France and Spain. Since the crew was affected by the spread of measles it is more than likely the passengers of the cruise ship may also be affected as well since measles has an incubation period of seven to twenty-one days.

Symptoms of measles include:

  • Rash
  • Runny nose
  • Fever
  • Ear infections
  • Pneumonia
  • Death

Description of measles is defined as:

It is a highly contagious respiratory disease that is caused by a virus. Measles is a disease and a virus also referred to as rubeola, which is usually confused with other rash-causing diseases such as roseola and rubella.

If you were aboard the cruise line during this time and are suffering from any of the symptoms seek medical attention immediately before you spread the measles to another!
