Meaning of 'Emmanuel' and 'Joshua'

Intro:  Boxing fans are looking forward to the anticipated match-up simply dubbed as "The Event" between the Philippines' Manny Pacquiao and Ghana's Joshua Clottey.  Tickets went on sale over the weekend for the March 13th fight that will take place at the $1.2 billion Texas Cowboys Stadium.

   Similarities & Differences

There are little similarities between these fighters labeled as the "Pacman" and the "Grand Master."  Pacquiao has ascended through the weight ranks all the way from light flyweight to welterweight.  On the other hand, Clottey is a fairly sizeable 5'8" welterweight who may weigh in as much as 170 lbs during fight night.

The Philippine-based boxer typically trains in California in preparation for his boxing matches.  While the Ghana, Africa native has relocated to, and trains in, New York on the U.S. east coast.

Ghana is a geographically small country on the western coast of Africa with a population of nearly 24 million.  On the other hand, the Philippines is an archipelago comprising of over 7,000 islands and consists of a population approaching 100 million.  Pacquiao sports a 50-3-2 record and will likely retire sometime in 2010.  Clottey, who hails from Accra, Ghana, goes into the March bout with a 35-2 record and likely has a few years of boxing ahead of him at both welterweight and junior middleweight.

One also finds at least some common ground between the two countries.  Ghana means Warrior King, and was the title accorded to the rulers of the medeival Ghana Empire.  Similarly, the Philippines is derived from King Philip II of Spain, as the latter occupied the islands for close to 400 years.

The majority of both countries' populations are Christian. About 60 percent of the population are Christians in Ghana, while the Philippines is approximately 90 percent Christian (with 80 percent of the total population considering themselves Roman Catholic). Both countries have minority Muslim populations. Roughly 12 percent in Ghana follow Islam, while between 5 and 10 percent consider themselves as Muslims in the Philippines.

'Emmanuel' and 'Joshua'  >

   Anthroponym

Anthroponymy is the study of names.  Here, we find similarity in the meanings of 'Emmanuel' and 'Joshua'.  Emmanuel is of Hebrew origin meaning "God is with us," and is an appropriate monicker for the devout Pacquiao.  The Filipino fighter often cites a "religious awakening" which helped to ignite a then-upstart career.  Pacquiao believed that he had a personal conversation with his God which clarified his values and mission.

Joshua is also of Hebrew origin meaning "God is my salvation."  In the Christian Bible, the monicker is often associated with the Isrealites' journey to the Promised Land.  Clottey stated his intentions of winning a boxing title for Ghanaians - an ample intent given the welterweight's name.  Additionally, like Pacquiao, Clottey also had a hard street life in Ghana.

Video (HBO): Pacquiao on Country and Religion (Nov 08)

At last week's press tours in Dallas, Texas and New York City, both men were amicable and easy going.  The media conference was a prelude to a brutal encounter in the ring.  Texas-based reporter Cami Driver is one of many who are looking forward to watching "The Event."

She interviewed Pacquiao and Clottey, on behalf of North Texas Boxing, and came away with a positive impression of both fighters:

My time with the fighters was up and I am now counting the days until “The Event” . . . along with all the millions of fans worldwide. I am a fan of both and predict this will definitely be an event . . . worth waiting for and worth watching. Good luck to both fighters . . .

Respectable great athletes are ambassador of goodwill and history of their country. More is now known about the Philippines in case of pacquiao and Ghana for Clottey. Write-ups about one's country, especially if they were done in relation to the popularity of a native athlete gives any citizen a sense of pride and self-respect. I thank writers who go out of their way to bring into light the humble background of an extra-ordinary boxer who is a class act. Pacquiao represents a school of thought in boxing which says you do not have to be a thrash talking and arrogant boxing champion to stir the interest and adulation of boxing fan. Pacquiao has raised the bar of a true essence of boxing as a sports and an entertainment.

And what does "Floyd" mean ?!? I know it means "Chicken" or "Duck"

  • wakee 2 years ago

I don't want to comment on Pacquiao's affinity to his God or with this talking with God thing because I believe that everytime one has to offer a prayer, he is there talking with his God.

With people talking Pacquiao's invincibility inside the ring to have something to do with him taking some PED, it's a shame to his God if indeed Pacquiao really got his inner strength from his God. There is also a big possibility that Pacquiao will instead show that his not on PED by showing his weakness inside the ring. But if Pacquiao is really keen on showing the power of real faith to his God, Pacquiao should never allow himself to be weaken by the false allegations of him taking PED. He will instead show to the world that he is fighting for the glory of his God that there is no amount of bad publicity could diminish his will and determination to surpass every obstacles placed before him and to be the best in his chosen expertise for everyone to witness the testament of pure dedication.

Please everyone... have we learned a great lesson from our friend Floyd M.? He gives us the best example of standing up for something that he strongly believes in agains all odds... - He really believes strongly that if a person (like him..)doesn't wanna fight then don't force him because you really can't force him no matter what.- Floyd, you are my hero you depend yourself of being the cowardest and stood up for that right, you have all the rights to be afraid and be a coward and you stood up for it and depended it with all your heart. You really defind the perfect meaning of a chicken... Goodluck on your new career being a runner or a talk show entertainer... "As for Manny the Man, He simply is the Best."

Indeed you are correct MR. TUPLANO... Mayweather is UNDEFEATED, and I got it Mr. TUPLANO... and if you want, I will repeat it to you... Mayweather is UNDEFEATED!!! SO WHAT? WHAT IS THE RELEVANCE? How can he be the KING of the RING, when he is even afraid to fight MANNY PACQUIAO? He instead demand nastiness just so HE CANNOT FIGHT PACQUIAO. Why then should we watch him in his fight in the UFC? WHY SHOULD A BOXING FAN will WATCH A FIGHTER WHO IS EVEN AFRAID OF HIS OWN SHADOW? I am a boxing fan and I will not waste my Hard-Earned Money just to see a fighter who is noted for his NASTINESS, a fighter who is noted FOR DUCKING, a fighter who is known to be CHERRY PICKING his opponent, a fighter whom the whole WORLD known as a "CHICKEN", and a "PSYCHOLOGICAL COWARD"and a "CHEATERS" (he cheat in the scale when he fight JUAN MANUEL MARQUEZ). Get it MR.TUPLANO!!!

Nice comparison and good meaning for both Joshua and Emmanuel. How about Floyd ?? Floy is a name taken from the word Ploy which means deception and fraudaulent thinking.

  • Emmanuel and Joshua 2 years ago

Emmanu-el = God with us and Joshua, pronounced Yeshua... is actually Jesus in Greek. In actually, Jesus should be Joshua in English. Jesus in Hebrew is pronounced Ye-soo... which means horse. However, in Hebrew He is Ye-shuah. So Joshua is the one who led the Israelites into the promised lands as Joshua (aka Jesus) leads us to the Promised Land.
