The Mean Green saw a 19-point lead slip away and fell in double overtime 86-81 to Florida Atlantic in Boca Raton.
They weren't able to hold on despite Tony Mitchell posting only the seventh 20-20 game in the nation this season with 22 points and 20 rebounds.
"The game never should have gotten to this point," coach Johnny Jones told repoerters after the game. "We had a nice lead and should have been able to close the game in regulation."
North Texas led 48-29 with less than 15 minutes to go, with Jacob Holman scoring 12 of his 20 points in those first five minutes of the second half. But then Florida Atlantic went on a 10-2 run to start the rally.
Then, with the Mean Green leading 66-61 with less than a minute and a half to go, the Olws scored the final five points of regulation, including Raymond Taylor's game-tying three-pointer with 27 seconds left.
The Owls led 73-71 in overtime after never leading in regulation, but the Green tied the game with 57 seconds left. They then had the cahnce to win, but neither Mitchell or Roger Franklin could hit.
FAU's three point shooting then carried them in the second overtime. as Talylor and Shavar Richardson's long shots built n 84-79 lead. The Owls' freethrows kept UNT from coming back from that.
