In its fourth year, the Cat Care Society’s Tails of the Painted Cats is back and more colorful than ever. The fun begins May 5 when the cat sculptures are unveiled to the public at the Lakewood Arts Council Gallery.

Tails of the Painted Cats is an art auction fundraiser for the Cat Care Society of Lakewood. Last year’s viewing events, dinner and auction raised over $55,000 for this cats-only animal shelter. Each fall a special CCS council selects a group of local artists from a large set of applicants. Those artists receive a fiberglass cat statue and a stipend to decorate the statue any way their creative minds see fit. The results are a fantastical series of fun, whimsical and beautiful cat sculptures with each cat taking on a life of its own. The cats will spend the spring and early summer on display around the city before being auctioned off in July at a gala dinner.

Here is the list of viewing events for the Painted Cats:

May 5 through May 29: Lakewood Arts Council Gallery, 85 South Union Boulevard, Lakewood. Public reception, Thursday, May 8, from 6:30 to 8 PM.

May 30 through June 22: Main Street Gallery, 28186 Highway 73, Evergreen. Public reception Friday, May 30, from 5 to 8 PM.

June 29 through July 20: Special individual appearances throughout the city. Venues include PISMO Fine Art Glass in Cherry Creek and Tender Touch Animal Hospital. More venues TBA.

July 12-13: Tagawa Gardens’ Grey Kitty’s Birthday pet adoption event.

July 19: Cat Care Society booth at Denver Dumb Friends League CatFest.

July 26: Tails of the Painted Cats Gala Dinner and Auction at Pinehurst Country Club in Lakewood.

New to the event this year are the Flat Cat paintings, a series of 10x10-inch canvas artworks by local artists. Back again for the auction this year are the popular kitten paintings and the special Painted Cat sculpture that will be given away by drawing. Tickets for the drawing are $10 each. Online viewing and auction bidding for the cats will be available starting in May. Follow the cats around town by visiting the CCS Painted Cats Facebook page.
