MDI and Old Town to open tournament play in new building

BANGOR-- The Mount Desert Island (MDI) Trojans and Old Town Coyotes opened the regular season on December 7th.

The same two teams will face each other in the first high school basketball tournament game at Cross Insurance Center. Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m. on Friday, February 14th.

MDI (14-4) finished as the number three seed in the final MPA class B standings.

The Trojans won their final four regular season games to lock down a trip to the quarterfinals.

MDI won both regular season meetings against Old Town, including Jon Phelps scoring 25 points to lead the Trojans to a 51-45 victory in the season opener.

Eric Hoogterp scored 24 points to lead the Coyotes to a 73-44 victory over Waterville in a preliminary round game on Wednesday evening.

Old Town (14-5) has won six straight games and seven of their last eight.

Ellsworth and Camden Hills will also play a class B quarterfinal game on Friday night at 6:30 p.m.

The Windjammers come in with a record of 15-3 and as the number two seed.

Griffin Nightingale made a three pointer with three second left to lift 10th seeded Ellsworth (10-9) to a 47-44 upset victory over Medomak Valley in a preliminary round game played on Tuesday evening.

The MDI girls basketball team will take on Ellsworth in the final game of the first day of the tournament. MDI won both regular season match-ups by an average of 35.5 points.
