BANGOR--- The Calais Blue Devils girls basketball team defeated the Orono Red Riots 63-54 at the Bangor Auditorium to capture their first Eastern Maine championship since 2010.
Sophomore Madison McVicar scored 12 of her team high 15 points in the first half for the Blue Devils. Calais held a 33-24 halftime lead.
Orono did not get closer than seven points the rest of the way and Calais built the lead up to 16 late in the third quarter.
The Blue Devils made six free throws in the fourth quarter to secure the victory. McVicar went 7-10 from the from the free throw line including 3-5 during the fourth quarter. She also had four assists, two steals and one assist.
Meaghan Cavanaugh put in 14 points (3-3 FT) for Calais. Olivia Smith chipped in with eight points. Paige Gillespie recorded seven points, six rebounds, two steals, two blocks.and one block.
Taylorae Carter also scored seven points for the Blue Devils. Mallory Buck added five points, Kaylee Johnson chipped in with two points.
Calais (21-0) will take on Waynflete (18-3) in the class C state championship at the Bangor Auditorium on Saturday, March 2nd at 7 p.m.
Jillian Woodward led the Red Riots with 15 points, 15 rebounds and two blocks. Elea Kass recorded 12 points, four steals, three assists and two rebounds.
Katie Sypher added 10 points for Orono. Katie Smith put in six points. Hannah Clement and Abby Weigang chipped in with five points each. Anna Eliza Souza Cunha scored one point.
Orono finishes the season with a 17-4 record.
